Social Enterprise in the 3rd Sector

If you are a budding social entrepreneur then this guide will be invaluable in providing an introduction to the many different forms of social enterprise. ‘Social Enterprise in the Third Sector' examines how social enterprises build organisational capacity and associational behaviour that has positive effects on societal development. The different types of social enterprises, including co-operatives, social firms and development trusts are investigated, and case studies help to bring theory to life. It is becoming increasingly difficult to separate social issues from economic ones; the requirement to increase competitiveness and productivity need not conflict with issues such as social inclusion. Social Enterprise in the Third Sector is an excellent ‘next-step' after social entrepreneurs have focussed on developing viable business strategies; once the objectives are clear it will then be possible to adopt the appropriate structure from the options presented in this guide.

Social Enterprise Childcare

In recent years, access to childcare has been recognised as one of the essential building blocks to a growing economy. For families and lone parents who need/want to work; good, affordable childcare is essential. For businesses to run smoothly, reliable childcare is a necessity. The Government has responded in a number of ways, such as the National Childcare Strategy and Every Child Matters. The issue this booklet seeks to address is where does social enterprise fit in?

The demand for places coupled with interventions made by the National Childcare Strategy has led to different types of organisations responding to the growing demands of the childcare sector. The focus on the sustainability of new and expanding childcare services, particularly in deprived areas where childcare is not traditionally profitable, has led to interest in the social enterprise model. The purpose of this booklet is to help guide those interested in this sector to use the social enterprise model effectively. The booklet will guide the reader through the social enterprise model, outline the background to the childcare sector, and make suggestions as to how organisations can take the first steps in using social enterprise in their long term strategy.

A SIMPLE approach to assessing Social Impact in Third Sector Organisations

SIMPLE.jpgOne of the major challenges facing social enterprises and other third sector organisations is communicating the benefits they deliver. As opportunities increase for social enterprises to contract with private and public sector organisations, it has become necessary to find ways of translating this positive effect into demonstrable data to support bids, tenders and funding applications. The SIMPLE approach to social impact assessment combines internal strategic review with outcomes based assessment to help managers of socially motivated businesses to visualise where and how they make positive contributions. By selecting appropriate measures with which to collect quantifiable data users are able to collect and communicate evidence of positive social benefit.
